Could your digital devices be harming your health?

Carrollton Eye Care Services, Medical Awareness
The plethora of electronic devices in use today, such as cell phones, tablets, and laptop computers, has drastically increased our exposure to blue light.  Blue Light and Vision Loss Blue light may cause oxidative damage to the eyes, and may play an integral role in causing age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to significant vision loss.  Blue Light and Sleep Melatonin is a sleep hormone in our bodies that helps to regulate our circadian rhythms. Our eyes contain receptors that give information to our body that regulates our sense of day and night. Blue light has been shown by researchers to actually boost attention and mood during the day, but chronic exposure to blue light at night can give messages to our brain to reduce melatonin secretion, which tells us…

Is your child ready for contacts?

Carrollton Eye Care Services
Children and Contact Lenses Many parents ask if children must be a certain age to wear contact lenses… the answer is no.  We have taught people from 8 to 80 to wear contact lenses.  A motivated child is amongst the easiest people to teach as they are accustomed to following directions.  Hygiene is an important component in any successful contact lens wearer.  Generally, children who are prescribed daily disposable contacts and are taught good hand washing skills, enjoy successful contact lens use.

Are You Getting Your Children Ready for School? Is a visit to the optometrist on your list?

Carrollton Eye Care Services
When the visual demands of homework and computers begin at school, many children will complain of tired eyes, headaches, eyestrain and even double vision. Some children are silent because these symptoms seem normal to them.  This can lead to lower grades, reading problems, poor spelling and low self-esteem.   Q: How many children have undetected vision problems? A: According to the AOA, one in four kids has a vision problem. Q: Doesn’t my child get a vision screening at school? A: There are significant differences between Vision Screenings and Comprehensive Vision Examinations.  Parents should be aware that there may be no set standards and criteria for passing a vision screening. Results can be determined arbitrarily and the standard eye chart alone only identifies five percent of the vision problems in children…

Fireworks Safety Tips for 4th of July

Carrollton Eye Care Services
Fireworks are fun, but it’s more fun if you can keep all your body parts  intact. The 4th of July and fireworks go together like, well, the 4th of July  and fireworks. Unfortunately, there are more than 9,000 fireworks-related  injuries every year, according to the American Academy of Opthalmology (AAO).  About 45 percent of those involve children age 15 or under, and eyes are among the most injured body parts. One in six  fireworks-related eye injuries results in permanent vision loss or  blindness. On the 4th of July, children are most likely to play with  sparklers, but the innocent-looking sparkler can be very  dangerous. Sparklers can easily ignite clothing and generally burn at  1,200-2,000 degrees Fahrenheit — hot enough to cause third-degree burns to the  skin. Out-of-control bottle rockets are…

Eating for Eye Health

Medical Awareness
Have you had your spinach today? The savory dark-green leafy green, among many vibrantly colored vegetables and fruits, is frequently overlooked, and often nonexistent on the plates of Americans across the country. We often hear why we need fruits and veggies - for heart health and cancer prevention. Now we can add to that list "eye health" - something that's so often taken for granted when we're young. But, don't assume your vision will keep getting worse as you age and that there's nothing you can do about it. You can do something about it. "Nutrition is critical," says Robert Abel, Jr., M.D., clinical professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University and author of "The Eye Care Revolution." A firm believer that the eyes can be a good indicator for…

What are Progressive Lenses?

Carrollton Eye Care Services
If you are over 40 and having difficulty with your vision, chances are you are experiencing presbyopia, the common gradual loss of near vision. But there is good news: you have more choices today than ever before. You don't have to carry a separate pair of glasses for reading or wear lined bifocal lenses like your parents did. Progressive lenses offer a smooth transition from distance vision through intermediate vision to near vision, and they supply all the in-between corrections as well. This means that instead of having just two different viewing zones (near and distant), like with bifocals, progressive lenses have progressive powers of correction (from bottom to top), easing eye strain and providing the most natural vision correction.
